Just some Goings-on

Just several interesting goings-on I am involved with that just might interest you!

1. Austin St. Festival this Sunday, Oct. 5th.!
(I'm not really involved in this but it's right outside my humble abode!)

2. AALDEF - Asian American Legal Defense & Education Fund
- I am volunteering with this organization to aid in the defense of Asian American voting rights. I will be surveying Asian American voters after they have exercised their right to vote. Check out their website if you're interested. Many times, problems arise among Asian Americans when they arrive at the voting site.

a. they may be asked to show identification beyond the basic governmental statements such as an electric bill or driver's license. There have been instances when an Asian American was turned away with a passport (one of the most official documents)!!, with the poll volunteer stating that there was no 'address' printed on the passport!

b. rude/hostile poll workers

c. no interpreters/translations - some Asian Americans have experienced times where poll volunteers patronize them and complain that they take too long to vote and are hurried & rushed when other voters are not. Asian Americans may need to read translations and may need more time in doing so.

d. there are even instances where poll workers send those who don't speak English to the back of the line and have them wait extra hours because poll workers did not know what to do with them. They end up helping those who spoke English first, which is very unfair.

something i was hesitant on sharing:

3. Marathon
Two weeks ago Jason and I have decided to train for a full Marathon. At first, we thought about a half marathon, but then I realized that if we were going to train, we might as well 'go hard or go home'. The reason why I was reluctant to share this is obviouslyyy because I am afraid I won't be able to complete this new goal of mine. But then again, maybe mentioning it will allow me not to let you guys down (plus, I'll be pretty embarrassed). So it's either I look like a fool or cross the finish line. I think I'll opt for the latter. As of this week, we are on the first week of our 18week training program!

That's all for now folks! Enjoyed.
P.S. Thesaurus is my BF4L!

the asian american vote is quite interesting. for one, we don't vote in as large numbers as we should.

good luck with the marathon. must as well do it while you're still young.
